Om museet

The museum occupies a former tram depot built in 1904 to house and maintain the vehicles for visitors to the 1905 Liège Universal Exhibition. The building served as a tram depot, then as a bus depot, before being converted into a museum in 1985.

The museum's history begins in the 1960s, when enthusiasts mobilised to save the first decommissioned electric vehicles, then destined for the scrapyard. Several amateur associations were formed, and the Musée des Transports en commun du pays de Liège was inaugurated on 25 April 1985. Originally it presented twelve restored vehicles. From 2010 a three-year plan professionalised the institution, which was recognised in 2013 by the Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles (category B).

In 2014 the museum took the name Musée des Transports en commun de Wallonie to better reflect its collections. These cover the history of urban and rural public transport in the Liège region and Wallonia from the 18th century to the present: about fifty vehicles on display, thousands of objects, plans, posters, photographs and archives. In 2012 the museum received the “Trois soleils” label from the Commissariat général au Tourisme.
