Om museet
The Musée du Chapitre occupies historic buildings directly linked to the Romanesque collegiate church of Saint-Vincent in Soignies: the western arm of the cloister, whose origins go back to the early 13th century, and the former administrative wing of the canons. From the 10th to the 18th century, these clerics ran the town in every area: political, economic, judicial, cultural and social. Upstairs, the chapter room, where they made their decisions, retains carved panelling and a bench from the last third of the 17th century.
Before being converted into a museum in 1996, the premises were known as the “Maison du Chapitre” and the “Maison du Suisse”, inhabited by the sacristan and the church verger (suisse) of the collegiate church; they also housed the parish library and a choir room.
The heart of the collections is the treasure of the Saint-Vincent collegiate church: sculptures, paintings, textiles, goldsmiths' work and manuscripts that evoke the medieval past of the town and the cult of Saint Vincent, patron saint of Soignies, whose relics are preserved here. The museum also houses, on deposit, works of religious art from the parishes of the deanery that could no longer be kept safely on site, as well as donations from private individuals, including the very important one from the daughters of the Soignies painter Albert Delaunois (1895–1936). Beyond its collections, the museum takes an interest in every aspect of the heritage of Soignies and its region.
