Om museet
The museum grew out of the passion of Maryse and Freddy Rixhon-Vanguestaine, a couple from Ferrières who collected old toys found at flea markets. In 1979, the International Year of the Child, their collection was exhibited in the village; the Musée du Jouet officially opened in 1984 in the former premises of the sisters’ school. The non-profit association “Musée du Jouet et de l’Enfant” was founded in 1985, and the third and fourth rooms opened in 1990.
The collection, given to the association by the founders, mainly covers the period from the late 19th century to the 1970s, and has grown mostly through donations. Today more than 1,500 games and toys are on display: animated toys (musical carousel, steam engines, mechanical toys), board games, dolls and doll’s tea sets, rocking horses, vehicles of all sizes, street games and unique handcrafted pieces.
The visit unfolds across three rooms: one devoted to toys made in Belgium, a room “Jouets d’ici et d’ailleurs” (“Toys from here and elsewhere”, covering France, Germany, the United States and beyond) and a room for temporary thematic exhibitions, renewed every two years. A play room allows children to play with toys from their grandparents’ time. The museum relies mainly on visitor admissions and its volunteers, with support from the commune of Ferrières.
