Om museet
The Musée Horta occupies the house and studio that the architect Victor Horta had built for himself in Saint-Gilles. In 1898 he acquired two neighbouring plots on the rue Américaine and had two buildings erected there by 1901, connected inside but clearly distinct: one for the family’s private life, the other for the work of the studio.
The house is famous for its arrangement in half-levels. The floors are not clearly separated: the staircase runs through the house like a backbone, and a large glass roof brings light into the centre of the building. From the mosaic floors to the door handles, every detail was carefully designed in the Art Nouveau style.
The whole is protected as a monument since 1963. It was then converted into a museum, which opened its doors on 8 March 1969. The house is one of Victor Horta’s major residences listed as UNESCO World Heritage. The visit is self-guided, room by room; it also shows how the servants and the family shared the house.
