The museum opened on 6 June 1972 in Anderlecht, rue Van Lint, in the former Lauwers photo-engraving workshop, where photographic plates for an underground newspaper had been made during the war. It was created by the Belgian resistance movements united within the Comité d'action de la Résistance (CAR-ARW), to preserve and pass on the memory of their struggle.

The building has been closed since 2018 for a complete renovation carried out by the municipality of Anderlecht with the support of the Brussels-Capital Region. The reopening, first announced for 2022 and then for 2023, still has no date: the official website only states that the museum is not accessible for the time being because of renovation. The project envisages a more contemporary presentation of the historical collections, with exhibitions on resistance today, in a “Maison des Résistances” open to the neighbourhood.
