Om museet

The forest museum lies in the middle of the Hallerbos, on the Vlasmarktdreef at car park 2, and is managed by the Agency for Nature and Forest (Agentschap voor Natuur en Bos). It is open on a few Sunday afternoons in spring and autumn, when it is free to visit. In spring there is a temporary exhibition on spring flowers; visitors can also pick up the free walking map Welkom in het Hallerbos.

The Hallerbos itself is centuries old. It is first mentioned in the year 686, when Saint Waltrudis left the forest estate to the Abbey of Mons. Later it came into the hands of the Dukes of Arenberg, who had it managed as a coppice-with-standards forest. During the First World War the German occupiers had all the large trees felled. In 1929 the forest became property of the Belgian State, and between 1930 and 1950 it was almost entirely replanted, which explains the young look of the forest.

Since the regionalisation of 1983 the forest has been managed by the Flemish and Walloon Regions; today it measures about 542 hectares in total. The Hallerbos is known worldwide for its carpets of blue hyacinths in April and May.
