Om museet
In 1976 the municipality of Grimbergen bought the Liermolen and the Tommenmolen, two historically valuable watermills, and in 1978 the Guldendal followed, the former farm of the Prinsenkasteel. In 1980 the municipal authorities commissioned Johan David to build a new museum and a collection. In 1982 the MOT was founded, with the vzw Heemschut as its governing body; the watermills were fitted out as exhibition spaces, and the Guldendal became an exhibition space and administrative seat.
In 1983 the museum received a special mention at the European Museum of the Year Award, and in 1999 it was recognised at regional level. Over the years new exhibitions were added, such as De houtbewerking (1988), De speelzolder (2004), Sterke vrouwen, zware was (2006), De smid. Baas van ijzer en vuur (2009), MOT & GO (2019) and Steigers en steen (2020). Databases such as ID-DOC and projects on bread ovens, smiths’ marks and water wells also form part of the museum’s work.
Today the MOT is an active museum that lets visitors get to know hand tools and techniques driven by water, wind and muscle power by doing. The museum is spread over three sites: the Guldendal with the Prinsenkasteel, the Liermolen and the Tommenmolen. The Liermolen remains closed in 2026 for restoration works. The MOT is also strong in the history of technology and answers questions about tools and trades.

The buildings are historic and have no lift; the many stairs make the visit difficult for anyone who finds walking hard. Wheelchair users can only visit the arcade gallery, the smithy and the exhibition ‘Sterke vrouwen, zware was’ in the Guldendal; in the Tommenmolen the mill floor (on request), the bread oven, the horse mill and the tavern terrace. The Parelpad is a wheelchair-friendly walking route. For visitors with visual impairments there are room texts in large print, tactile strips on the stair treads and guided tours. Adaptations can be considered on request; a visual step-by-step plan and a tablet for a virtual tour of the castle are available.
