Om museet

The museum was founded in 1969, when active scouts from East Brabant asked former members in Leuven to help look back on fifty years of scouting in the region. The success of that exhibition led to a lasting collection. In 1976 and 1977 the Nationaal Scouts Archief was set up as a non-profit association (vzw), and in 1979 the city of Leuven gave it space in a former workshop of a technical school in Heverlee, where the first permanent exhibition took shape.

When that rental agreement ended, the collection moved on 1 December 1981, with about thirteen truckloads, to the Sint-Geertruiabdij, which by then belonged to the city. On 5 June 1982 the museum officially opened in the former abbey chapel. In 2009 a renovation of the whole museum began.

The Sint-Geertruiabdij was founded between 1204 and 1206 by Duke Henry I of Leuven and was inhabited by Augustinian canons. After the French Revolution the buildings were sold and partly demolished. The city of Leuven bought the complex in 1979 and had it restored. Today the permanent collection shows the history of the scouting and guiding movement from the past to the present, supplemented by temporary exhibitions, a heritage archive and a heritage library.
