Om museet
The Natuurpunt Museum is housed in a 1911 townhouse on the Graatakker in Turnhout, in an eclectic neoclassical style. It is a typical middle-class house with an extended basement where the kitchen and other staff workrooms were; the monumental staircase stands out in the hall. In 1961 the ornithological society De Wielewaal acquired the building. Today it is part of the Natuur.huis, the training centre of Natuuracademie.
The natural history collection goes back to Father Segers and other pioneers of De Wielewaal, which was founded in 1933. They owned mounted birds, skins and eggs, which also served as educational material for lectures. In 2001 the collection was expanded with a private collection. Today it counts more than a thousand mounted animals.
Across four exhibition rooms, the museum shows the connection between nature and heritage, with the collection, old films and historical artworks. Alongside the permanent display there are temporary exhibitions on new themes and challenges, and in videos the taxidermist Emiel Janssen tells the story behind animals such as the otter, the woodcock and the imperial eagle. Behind the house lies an ecological nature garden that is always freely accessible.
