Om museet
The Pijp- en Tabaksmuseum was founded in 1992 by Richard Thiron, a passionate pipe smoker and collector. His collection tells the story of smoking and smoking culture. After his death in 2016, friends and family took over the museum and set up a non-profit association (vzw); in 2017 it reopened. The presentation had already been renewed in 2013.
The pipe room traces the development of the clay pipe in shape and size from 1492, when the tobacco plant became known in Europe, to the present day. There are also meerschaum and bruyère pipes on display, together with pipe and tobacco cutting machines, hookahs and tobacco jars. The cigar room highlights the cigar industry of Sint-Niklaas, which provided a lot of work between 1921 and 1969. Many items come from the local cigar factory Mignot & De Block. In the entrance hall lies one of the largest cigars in the world.
On the first floor is the Reynaertsalon, where Richard Thiron's pipe-smoking club used to meet. Today visitors can taste regional products there, and small concerts sometimes take place on Sunday mornings. With the travelling exhibition Fumoir, the museum also brings memories of the old smoking culture to residential care centres.
