Om museet

The Poldermuseum has its origins in the 1950s in Wilmarsdonk. The village and the other polder villages of Lillo, Oorderen and Oosterweel had to make way for the expansion of the port of Antwerp. From 1955 parish priest Jan-Baptist Eelen began collecting old everyday objects from the village, to preserve something of polder life for later. The parish hall soon became too small.

In 1959 the Heemkundige Kring van de Antwerpse Polder (local history circle of the Antwerp Polder) was founded, and on 19 December 1959 the Poldermuseum officially opened in Wilmarsdonk. When that village too was to disappear, the City of Antwerp made several houses in Lillo-Fort available. There the museum was solemnly reopened on 26 June 1963. Since 1 October 1986 it has been run by the non-profit association (vzw) Poldermuseum Lillo, with its own board alongside the local history circle.

In the museum rooms you can see how people used to live in the polder villages: period interiors, a classroom of yesteryear, a village shop, an inn, an original bakery oven, a hairdresser’s and everyday objects from many trades. There are also memories of both World Wars, the customs post, the floods of 1953, faith and superstition, and of the painters Nicasius De Keyser and Albert De Vree. Volunteers set up the rooms themselves and welcome the visitors.
