In 1610 Peter Paul Rubens and his wife Isabella Brant bought a house in Antwerp. Rubens immediately designed a remodelling that combined the Old Flemish building style with the Italian Renaissance. He had a sculpture gallery, a large studio and a garden with a portico and garden pavilion added. The house was both his home and his workplace.

After the eighteenth century the house fell into disrepair. In 1937 the city of Antwerp bought the property; it was then restored and furnished as a museum, which opened its doors in 1946. The portico and garden pavilion were restored between 2017 and 2019, and in 2022 the artist’s house was 3D-scanned.

Since 2016 the Rubenshuis has been refurbished and extended in phases, with more space, more comfort and better accessibility. The artist’s house itself is temporarily closed for renovation and will reopen in 2030 at the earliest. In the meantime visitors can go to the rebuilt baroque garden, the Rubens Experience and the library. The neighbouring Kolveniershof, built from 1631 for the Antwerp archers’ guild, will also be restored.

Gratis entré: Every first Tuesday of the month free for residents of Antwerp and the districts with an A-card.

Free admission also applies to holders of an A-card with reduced rate, a UiTPAS with VT status, a Museumpas, an ICOM card, the Lerarenkaart van Klasse or an Antwerp City Pass, and to Friends of the municipal museums. The ticket is valid only on the chosen date; the Rubenshuis is cashless.

There is a lift, and the lower level has adapted sanitary facilities; the garden has wide paths and access gates. Two wheelchairs are available free of charge at the desk (book via rubenshuis@antwerpen.be). Hard-of-hearing visitors can download audio texts and a podcast, or request them at the desk; the film has Dutch subtitles. In the Rubens Experience audio fragments can be heard, and a podcast is available in the garden.

Børn og familie

Buggies are welcome, but inside the building the buggy stays in the cloakroom. Free baby carriers can be borrowed at the desk (book via rubenshuis@antwerpen.be). Young people under 18 enter free.

Transport & parkering

The visitor entrance is at Hopland 13. The city centre has a low-emission zone (LEZ). Bicycle parking on Hopland diagonally opposite the entrance and at the Wapper; Velo stations at Hopland and the Meir.

Lockers in the entrance area for coats, bags and packed lunches (backpacks up to 45 x 25 x 25 cm; you set your own PIN code). There is no fixed lunch room. During the Rubens Experience or the garden visit you cannot leave the building and re-enter.

Op til 250 personer.

Available for hire are the garden (seated dinner for up to 100 guests, reception up to 250; on weekdays 17:30–23:00, at weekends 18:30–23:00, on Wednesdays all day) and the studio (meeting up to 20, lecture up to 50, seated dinner up to 40, reception up to 70 people; every day, all day).
