Om museet
The Stedelijk Museum Hoogstraten is located in the Beguinage of Hoogstraten, which arose in the 14th century and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage. The museum grew out of two older museum collections of the Hoogstraten Antiquarian Circle (Oudheidkundige Kring): the Heilig Bloedvolksmuseum, founded in 1928, and the Oudheidkundig museum. Since 24 April 1999 it has been housed in a restored convent house at Begijnhof 9, together with the adjoining houses at numbers 10 and 11.
The permanent display shows the history of the town of Hoogstraten and its prehistory. The archaeological collection includes finds from the Meirberg in Meer, one of the oldest archaeological sites in Belgium, and from excavations in the Beguinage. The Holy Blood collection recalls the veneration of the Holy Blood, which began in 1652 when Hoogstraten received the Holy Blood cloths from Boxtel. The heritage collection contains objects of old crafts and everyday life, such as sixteenth-century matrices for aldermen's seals and Hoogstraten pottery.
The art collection goes back mainly to two donations: works by Alfred Ost in 1937 and some six hundred works by Jan Huet in 2001. In 2015 the museum bought a painting of the interior of the Saint Catherine's Church by Joannes Bosboom from 1843. Each year there are three temporary exhibitions. The museum is free, including the garden, Den Ouden Koolhof, which is maintained as it was in the sixteenth century.
