Om museet
The roots of S.M.A.K. go back to 1957, when Karel Geirlandt and other art lovers founded the Vereniging voor het Museum van Hedendaagse Kunst. They wanted an independent museum for contemporary art and bought works in the meantime. In 1975 the Ghent Museum of Contemporary Art opened, the first Belgian museum devoted to contemporary art. It was housed in the Museum voor Schone Kunsten, and Jan Hoet became its first director.
For more than twenty years the museum was housed in makeshift conditions, so the collection could only be seen in changing and fragmentary displays. In 1996 “De Rode Poort” opened as the first exhibition of a temporary location in a converted side wing of the old trade-fair complex. In 1999 the museum got its own building, a converted former casino opposite the Museum voor Schone Kunsten, and the name S.M.A.K. (Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst). Since then the two museums have formed a museum island on the edge of the Citadelpark. In 2005 Philippe Van Cauteren succeeded Jan Hoet as artistic director.
The collection comprises more than 3,000 works from after the Second World War to the present. Alongside art movements such as Cobra, pop art, minimal art, conceptual art and arte povera, it also includes work by many artists who have since become international references. The museum shows works from the collection and presents exhibitions by contemporary artists. Together with the Flemish government, the city is working on plans for a new museum building with more storage space.
