Om museet

Technopolis is the Flemish hands-on centre for science and technology in Mechelen and a science centre in the broad sense: visitors do not just watch, but try out for themselves how the world works. The centre opened to the public in February 2000 and has grown steadily since. In 2006 a Doe-tuin (hands-on garden) was added, where you can also experiment outdoors, and in 2007 a zone for children from 4 years old followed.

In 2013 the centre was extended with a zone for young people, a workshop space and a lab. At the end of 2019 the Flemish government invested in a thorough renewal: in 2021 Zeekracht opened, a digital zone about technology in ports and at sea, and in 2022 the main exhibition received a completely new layout. In 2024 the technology exhibition ON/OFF and the temporary zone AI! followed, and the toddler zone was replaced by Doolhoofd, a zone for the very youngest children.

Alongside the permanent zones, Technopolis organises temporary exhibitions, science shows and demonstrations, and on weekends and during school holidays also workshops. The explanations at the interactive displays are available in Dutch, French and English, and an app of its own serves as a guide for visitors.

Permanente udstillinger

• Hoofdexpo – In the main exhibition you discover through play how science and technology work in everyday life; in autumn 2026 the exhibition is gradually converted into a WonderDepot.
• ON/OFF – An interactive exhibition in which you get to know digital technologies such as artificial intelligence, augmented reality and virtual reality through play.
• Doolhoofd – A zone for children from 4 years old in which asking questions and doing your own research are central.

Gratis entré: In the week of your birthday you enter free (on presentation of your identity card, for the birthday person only).

The ticket price includes all exhibitions and zones, workshops during holidays, live entertainment and parking. Tickets can be bought online or at the ticket desk. Online tickets contain a code for 40% off your train ticket to Mechelen. Teachers get 50% off on presentation of their teacher card. With a UiTPAS social rate you get 80% off at the ticket desk; with 30 UiTPAS points you pay half. Members of the Gezinsbond get €5 off via Gezinsbond.be. With a museum pass you do not enter free. An annual pass is available; a day ticket you bought that same day is then refunded. Press get free admission on presentation of a press card.

Technopolis says that everyone can visit comfortably and gives an overview of the facilities. Assistance dogs and guide dogs for the blind may come inside; other pets may not. A few times a year there is a low-stimulus day for visitors who are sensitive to crowds and noise. A 360° tour on the website helps you explore the building in advance.

A visit is recommended from 4 years old (a guideline age, not a hard limit); Doolhoofd is especially for the very youngest. There are family shows, and during school holidays there are workshops from around 6 years old. A baby room with a changing mat and a place to express milk is on the ground floor and in the basement; in the restaurant there is a microwave to warm baby food. Children can buy a search booklet, and birthday parties are available in three packages.

Transport & parkering

Technopolis lies along the E19 (Brussels–Antwerp): take exit 10 Mechelen-Zuid and drive straight onto the car park. Technopolis is a Blue-bike location; you can also reach it via the cycle highway along the Tangent.

Restaurant Lumen (order via a QR code at the table) and Grab & Go for sandwiches, snacks, drinks, waffles and ice cream; both only for visitors with a day ticket. You may also bring your own lunch and eat it in the free picnic area. Coin-operated lockers and coat hooks are at the reception. Free Wi-Fi for visitors. The building is completely smoke-free.
