Om museet

In 1865 the poet Guido Gezelle laid the foundations for a Bruges folklore museum. In 1936 the Bond der Westvlaamsche Folkloristen was founded, which held a first folklore exhibition in 1937. From 1948 the Folklore Museum had a permanent home in the Stadshallen.

At the end of the 1960s the city council decided to move the collection elsewhere and bought a row of modest workers’ cottages on the Balstraat, known as the Schoenmakersrente. After a thorough renovation, the Museum voor Volkskunde opened there on 29 June 1973. In 1982 a new corner house, De Zwarte Kat, was added, and in 2003 three adjoining houses on the Rolweg were incorporated.

The collection consists of objects from everyday life and from traditional crafts, presented in thematic settings: a classroom, a grocery, a pharmacy, a hatter’s, a tailor’s, a sugar bakery, a cooper’s, a shoemaker’s and clog-maker’s workshop, a living room and a museum inn. The museum is part of Musea Brugge.

On the first floor, the interactive display Kinderen van toen (Children of Then) tells the story of childhood in the 1950s and 1960s. In 2026 the museum received the label Goedgekeurd door en voor kinderen (approved by and for children).
