Om museet
The site was first occupied in the late Neolithic period. In the 4th century BCE the Volcae Arecomici founded a fortified town of more than five hectares on the hill, surrounded by a thick rampart, part of which can still be seen.
Around 125–120 BCE the Romans conquered southern Gaul and built the Via Domitia, linking Italy with Spain. Ambrussum became the crossing point of the Vidourle on this route. The upper town was Romanised, with a forum and a colonnaded square, while a roadside station developed at the foot of the hill, with inns, a forge, baths and a post station. The river crossing was rebuilt in stone; only one arch survives today, the Pont Ambroix, listed as a historic monument in 1840.
The upper town declined from the end of the 1st century BCE, and the roadside station was abandoned in Late Antiquity. The site then lay forgotten for more than a thousand years. Excavations took place at the beginning of the 20th century, and then regularly from 1967 onwards; they revealed houses, a basilica, the paved street and the rampart. Since 1984 research has also focused on the roadside station.
The site is now managed by Lunel Agglo. A museum, opened in 2011, displays the archaeological finds and a video on the history of the place, and a trail with information panels lets visitors walk among the remains.

The site holds the “Tourisme et Handicap” label for all four types of disability. The museum and its surroundings are accessible to people with reduced mobility, with two dedicated parking spaces. On the archaeological site, the area at the foot of the hill (roadside station and Roman bridge) is reachable by a level path, but the path to the summit is steep and stony and not advisable in a standard wheelchair. The vehicle access barrier can be opened on request so you can park closer. A tactile totem, replicas to touch, a raised-relief map and booklets in easy-to-read language are available.
