Om museet
The Centre Pompidou-Metz opened in 2010. It is presented as the first decentralization of a major national cultural institution, the Centre Pompidou, carried out with the local authorities of Metz. The institution is a public cultural cooperation body whose members are the Centre Pompidou, the State, the Eurométropole de Metz, the Grand Est Region and the City of Metz.
The building is the outcome of an international competition: the team of Shigeru Ban, Jean de Gastines and Philip Gumuchdjian was selected in 2003. Its hexagonal roof of laminated timber covers about 8,000 m² beneath a white membrane of fibreglass and Teflon. At its centre rises a 77 m spire, which recalls the year the Centre Pompidou was founded, 1977.
Three superimposed and intersecting concrete galleries, each about 80 m long, offer exhibition spaces without interior columns. Their glazed ends open views onto the cathedral, the station and the Seille park. The centre also has a forum, a Grande Nef, an auditorium and a studio.
The centre has no permanent collection of its own and presents large-scale exhibitions. Chiara Parisi has been its director since 2019.
