Om museet

The Nohant estate, in the Berry region, was bought in 1767 by Philippe Péarron de Serennes, who had the present manor house built on the foundations of an old medieval castle. In 1793 it passed to Marie-Aurore Dupin de Francueil, the paternal grandmother of Aurore Dupin, the future George Sand. Orphaned of her father at a very young age, the girl spent her childhood there and inherited the estate on her grandmother’s death in 1821.

George Sand adopted this name in 1832 with the publication of “Indiana”. She lived most of her life at Nohant, where she wrote the greater part of her work: novels, short stories, plays, articles and letters. The house was also a place of artistic encounters: Frédéric Chopin, Franz Liszt, Honoré de Balzac, Eugène Delacroix, Pauline Viardot and Gustave Flaubert all stayed there. The writer died at Nohant in 1876 and rests in the family cemetery next to the garden.

Her granddaughters later lived in the house and wished to bequeath it to the state, which became owner in 1952; the last occupant died in 1961. Today managed by the Centre des monuments nationaux, the estate comprises the house, its outbuildings, the farmyard, the garden, a six-hectare park and the cemetery. One floor of the reception building houses a puppet exhibition linked to the passion of Maurice Sand, the writer’s son, for the theatre.
