Om museet

The idea of a museum on Groix emerged in the 1970s, driven by researchers and associations, when the Groisillons (islanders) became aware of how fragile their heritage was, especially that of the maritime culture of what was once France’s first tuna port. The commune bought the former Romieux tuna cannery and in 1981 entrusted the museum’s programme to a curator. The municipal museum opened to the public in July 1984.

The collections consist largely of donations from more than 350 island families, supplemented by purchases supported by the Fonds régional d’acquisition des musées. Visitors can see boats, models, drawings and paintings, fishing gear, costumes, everyday objects and old photographs. An audiovisual area shows films on request, and temporary exhibitions are held every year.

The museum holds the “Musée de France” label and is supported by the DRAC, the Morbihan Département and the Brittany Region. With a combined ticket, visitors can also see the fisherman-farmer’s house in the village of Kerlard, which shows the island’s traditional housing at the beginning of the 20th century.
