Om museet
In 1975, residents of Loubaresse wanted to preserve their heritage and opened a “Maison du paysan” (peasant's house) to the public. From this collective initiative the Écomusée de Margeride was born in 1984; it is now run by Saint-Flour Communauté and holds the Musée de France label.
The ecomuseum presents the life of a mountain region of the Massif Central, its heritage and its know-how. Its collections are ethnographic: furniture and household objects, farm and craft tools, textiles, but also Margeride beads and glass, religious objects, toys and instruments. The Saint-Martin garden holds a botanical collection of more than 300 species.
Four sites make up the museum. The Saint-Martin garden lies at the foot of the medieval tower of Ruynes. The school of Clémence Fontille, at Signalauze, brings to life a schoolchild's day in the 1930s and is listed as a historic monument. The farm of Pierre Allègre, at Loubaresse, shows the life of Margeride peasants more than 150 years ago. At the foot of the Garabit viaduct, an exhibition tells the story of the construction of this structure by Gustave Eiffel.
