Om museet
The museum opened in June 1996 under the name Cartopole. It came about through an initiative of the town of Baud, a collector couple and the town librarian, who wanted to build archives of postcards focused on Brittany. The managing association was dissolved at the end of 2011, and the town of Baud took over management in 2012.
In 2015, the institution left its first premises on rue d’Auray for Le Quatro, the town’s cultural hub on avenue Jean Moulin. On that occasion it took the name Le Carton voyageur. Today the museum has a permanent exhibition area and a room for temporary exhibitions.
The collections contain more than 120,000 postcards, a large share of which concern Brittany, as well as preparatory drawings and glass photographic plates. An online database, Cartolis, makes part of the holdings available. The museum is supported by Baud Communauté and attached to the town of Baud.
Each year a themed exhibition is presented; the 2026 one, “Le Tour du monde en 80 cartes postales”, follows an explorer from Baud between 1900 and 1901.
