Om museet

The house is a former farm in the hamlet of Houjarray, in the commune of Bazoches-sur-Guyonne in the Yvelines. Jean Monnet, one of the architects of European construction, lived there from 1945 until his death in 1979 and made it his refuge, where he developed his vision of a Europe of peace and unity.

After 1945, Monnet and Robert Schuman proposed pooling coal and steel production, which led to the European Coal and Steel Community. In 1982 his widow handed the house over to the European Parliament, and it became a museum in 1987.

From 1990 to 2018, its management was entrusted by agreement to the Association Jean Monnet. Since 2018, the European Parliament has run it directly, through its Maison Jean Monnet Service.

The house preserves Jean Monnet's living environment: his books, his objects, artworks from his collection, the original of his medal and three portraits by Cyril de La Patellière. A permanent interactive exhibition presents his life and work, as well as the influence of the European institutions on everyday life. The park and the “jardin du citoyen européen” are accessible all year round.
