Om museet

In 1730 Louis XV granted letters patent to establish a royal manufactory of bladed weapons in Alsace, so that France would no longer depend on blades from Solingen. Henri Anthès chose the Ehn valley above Obernai for its water, forests, sandstone quarries and proximity to Strasbourg. The first workers came from Solingen, hence the name Klingenthal, “valley of blades”. The manufacturing village stretched for about 1500 m along the Ehn, with a network of canals powering the forge hammers and grinding wheels.

The state manufactory operated until 1836, after which the Coulaux family took over the site as a private business. From 1840, Klingenthal produced mainly scythes and sickles, while still making sabres. The Coulaux company's workshops closed for good on February 1, 1962.

The Maison de la Manufacture d'Armes Blanches, run by the Association pour la Sauvegarde du Klingenthal, presents this history on three levels: a plan of the village, a reconstructed workshop of a First Empire blade smith, the stages of production, an armoury with sabres and swords, cuirasses, and a space devoted to the Coulaux family.
