Om museet
The Maison de la Pêche is housed in the Centre de marée on the harbour of La Turballe, in the Loire-Atlantique department. It tells the story of the birth of this sardine port, the rise of the canneries and the evolution of boats and fishing techniques, from the past to the present.
The museum has been run since 1996 by the association “Au Gré des Vents”. The association was founded in 1992 by local residents who wanted to save from destruction the sardine boat of the same name, which had been taken out of the fleet in 1990 after the reduction of fishing capacity required of France. The association also looks after the Moulin de Kerbroué, runs harbour tours, fish market tours (criée) and several workshops.
The visit is designed for the whole family: it presents the fish species caught, fishing methods, seafaring trades and the journey of the fish from the sea to the plate. The rooms are small, and the association is working on a modernization to make the exhibition more complete and more fun.
