Om museet
The museum occupies the house where Antoine Laumet, known as Lamothe-Cadillac, the founder of the city of Detroit, was born on March 5, 1658. The single-storey house dates mainly from the 17th century and belongs to the commune of Saint-Nicolas-de-la-Grave. Its façades and roofs have been listed as historic monuments since July 18, 1973.
The museum opened in 1974. Historians from Detroit supported the purchase and restoration of the house, which was financed by private donors, and presented copies of original documents about Cadillac at the opening. The house has also been a historic site of the State of Michigan since 1984.
The route traces Lamothe-Cadillac’s life and presents a reconstructed 17th-century interior.
