Om museet
The villa Les Rhumbs, originally called the “villa des Falaises”, was bought by the Dior family in 1906, who renamed it after the compass-rose tiles of its glass-fronted bay window. Madeleine Dior, Christian's mother, laid out the garden with her son's help. Economic hardship forced the family to leave the property in 1929. The town of Granville bought the villa in 1938 and turned the garden into a public park; the house was then rented to various occupants.
The success of the exhibition “Christian Dior, l'autre lui-même”, shown in 1987 at the Richard Anacréon modern art museum, convinced the partners of the value of a museum dedicated to the designer. The Musée Christian Dior opened in the villa in 1997. It received the “Musée de France” label in 2002 and the “Maison des Illustres” label in 2012.
The museum holds around 3,000 objects and documents relating to Dior's childhood and to his work as a couturier, perfumer, art dealer and business leader. Every year, a completely new theme exhibition drawn from these collections fills the villa's three floors. The garden, overlooking the sea, remains free to visit all year round.
