Om museet
Le Mans was one of the first French towns to open a museum after the Revolution: in 1799 collections were shown in the galleries of the Abbey of La Couture. In 1846 a museum of historic monuments was set up in the basement of the municipal theatre and in 1876 took the name Archaeological Museum of the City of Le Mans. It moved in 1903 to the crypt of the former collegiate church of Saint-Pierre-la-Cour and was closed in 1940, its works being dispersed.
The present museum stands on the site of a former printing works and a medieval convent, opposite the Palace of the Counts of Maine in the Cité Plantagenêt. The architect Bernard Althabegoïty designed the building, which offers about 3,360 m², including 1,400 m² for the permanent collections, 300 m² for temporary exhibitions and a 120-seat auditorium. It opened in June 2009.
The route tells the story of Le Mans and its region in five chapters, from prehistory and protohistory through the Gallo-Roman period and the early Middle Ages to the Middle Ages, up to the charter granted to the town by Louis XI in 1481. Notable objects include the Sablons treasure from Bords-de-l'Huisne, the shroud of Saint Bertrand, the Plantagenet enamel and the Coëffort silver treasure. A gallery also presents six medieval recumbent effigies.
