Om museet
The Chaumont museum is a municipal museum. It occupies the Romanesque keep, about twenty metres high, which served as a prison until 1886, as well as several lower rooms of the former palace of the counts of Champagne, built in the 13th and 14th centuries. The municipal collections date back to the Revolution.
The route brings together archaeology (a cuirass from the late 9th century BC, medieval sculptures, the recumbent effigy of Jean Ier de Châteauvillain, fragments of the tomb of Claude de Lorraine), fine arts with an emphasis on sculpture (a room devoted to Jean-Baptiste and Edme Bouchardon), and painting, which is shown on rotation due to lack of space. Works on view include pieces by Charles Gussin, Luca Ferrari and Félix Boisselier, and a “Penseur” by Paul Dubois.
One room recalls the glove-making industry that once thrived in Chaumont, with a pair of Saxe-blue gloves from the Tréfousse firm. The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions, lectures and workshops.
