Om museet
The Musée d’Art moderne de Fontevraud arose from the donation of part of the personal collection of Martine and Léon Cligman. The Pays de la Loire Region presented the project on September 1, 2017, at the heart of the Royal Abbey of Fontevraud, a historic monument owned by the state. The museum opened on May 19, 2021.
It occupies the Fannerie, a building dating from around 1786 at the end of the monastic period, which housed the abbesses’ stables before being used for penal purposes in the 19th century. The chief architect of the Monuments historiques, Christophe Batard (agency 2BDM), designed the fit-out over 1,700 m², and the studio of Constance Guisset created the scenography.
The collection includes more than 800 works: paintings from the 19th and 20th centuries, nearly 300 drawings, sculptures, glassware by Maurice Marinot, and antique and non-Western objects. The route avoids the conventional categories of art history. It brings together objects from different cultures and periods to evoke the gaze of 20th-century collectors. The museum received a first star in the Michelin Green Guide in 2022, and a second in 2024.
