Om museet
Uxellodunum was a Gallic stronghold in the land of the Cadurci. It was the last Gallic town to resist Caesar and his legions, in 51 BCE. The oppidum lies on the plateau of Puy d’Issolud, straddling the communes of Vayrac and Saint-Denis-lès-Martel. According to the ancient account, the Romans dug underground galleries to drain the spring that supplied the besieged, which led to their surrender.
Excavations carried out on the site for centuries have yielded many Gallic and Roman weapons, such as arrowheads, pilum heads and catapult bolt tips, as well as Roman sandal nails, Gallic coins and pottery. The galleries dug by the Roman sappers and the Gallic counter-galleries have also been uncovered. In 2001 the Ministry of Culture officially recognised Puy d’Issolud as the site of the battle.
In Vayrac, a small museum presents a model of the historic site and a selection of objects found during the excavation campaigns. It opens only in summer.
