Om museet
The Musée de Gajac is the municipal museum of Villeneuve-sur-Lot. Its collections have long roots: in 1947 they were installed in the villa of the architect Gaston Rapin, which his widow had bequeathed to the town to create a museum. That is why the institution is also called the Musée Rapin.
In 1996 the collections moved to the Gajac mill, a former industrial building converted to house them. The museum opened in this new setting around the turn of the 2000s, and it has held the “Musée de France” designation since 2003.
The collection is very varied. It includes objects from prehistory, the Gallo-Roman period and the Middle Ages, religious art, decorative arts including ceramics, extra-European civilisations, photography and local history. The emphasis is on modern and contemporary art: painting and sculpture of the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries, as well as a significant group of prints and drawings.
The museum permanently displays part of these collections and also offers temporary exhibitions. A virtual tour and a page on the permanent collections are available on the town’s website.
