Om museet

The museum emerged in the 1960s from the initiative of former resistance fighters, deportees and teachers. It opened on April 23, 1966 under the name Musée de la Résistance dauphinoise, in the house where Stendhal was born, on rue Jean-Jacques-Rousseau. It took the name Musée de la Résistance et de la Déportation in 1970.

By the late 1980s the site had become too small. The museum became departmental in 1988, then moved on July 1, 1994 to 14 rue Hébert, a building dating from 1863 converted into a museum over four levels. It has kept its current name since then.

The permanent display has been updated several times. It follows chronological order and starts from local events: entry into the Resistance, the Service du travail obligatoire (compulsory labour service) and the Italian occupation, the maquis, the situation of Jews in Isère between 1939 and 1944, autumn 1943, deportation and the Liberation.

The museum sees itself as a place of history and society, designed to pass that history on. It also invites visitors to reflect on the values of the Resistance and on human rights. It is part of the network of eleven museums run by the Isère Department and offers activities for families, schools and groups.
