Musée de Mazères – Hôtel d'Ardouin

The Mazères museum is housed in the Hôtel d'Ardouin, a brick mansion built in 1580 by Pierre Garrigues, a wealthy woad merchant. The plant was used to make a blue dye, and the mansion is surrounded by a garden laid out in the Renaissance style. The building has been partly listed as a historic monument since 1955 and has belonged to the town since the 18th century.

The museum opened in 1995 in a single room, then expanded over several levels. Its permanent exhibition “Barbares en Gaule du Sud” presents objects from the excavations of the Bénazet necropolis, about two kilometers from the town on the left bank of the Hers. Discovered in the 1960s during gravel quarrying, the site yielded 363 graves and two necropolises: one from the Visigothic period (5th century), the other from the Merovingian period (6th to 8th centuries).

The route also covers the Boulbonne abbey, founded in 1129 by Benedictine monks, and the founding of the Mazères bastide in 1253. On the first floor, medieval objects recall the life of the counts of Foix, notably Gaston Fébus, and a room is devoted to woad (pastel). The basement displays remains from the Boulbonne abbey, coins, and a depiction of rural life at the start of the 20th century.
