Om museet
The Musée de minéralogie of the University of Strasbourg was founded in 1890 at the initiative of Paul Groth, first director of the Institute of Geology. Its oldest collections date from the second half of the 18th century, including the natural history cabinet of Jean Hermann.
It holds about 30,000 mineral samples, many dating from the 19th century or from deposits now exhausted. It also has around 450 meteorites, crystallographic models in glass, cardboard, wood and wire, plaster casts, and old scientific instruments such as X-ray generators. Around 2,500 pieces were displayed in two rooms on the second floor of the Institute.
The museum belongs to the School and Observatory of Earth Sciences (EOST) and is part of the university’s Jardin des sciences. Since the renovation of the Institute of Geology, the collections were moved in September 2024; the museum announces its return in 2027 and in the meantime offers off-site exhibitions.
