Om museet
The museum was founded on December 9, 1961, on the initiative of scholars passionate about the history of Nogent-sur-Marne and eastern Paris. It continued a local history society founded in 1949 and a social museum set up in 1950. Initially run by an association, it became municipal in 1976 and intercommunal in 2018 when it joined the Paris Est Marne & Bois territory. Originally housed in the Hôtel des Coignard, it reopened in 1994 at 36 boulevard Gallieni. Since 2002 it has carried the designation “Musée de France”.
The permanent exhibition shows the Marne riverbanks from the Industrial Revolution onward, preceded by a short introduction to eastern Paris at the end of the Ancien Régime. It shows the role of the railway in urban growth and Sunday excursions, the rivalry between oarsmen and sportsmen, rowing clubs, swimming and the guinguettes.
The collections are very varied: gouaches by Claude Delaunay of Nogent, prints after Watteau, autograph holdings, faience and porcelain, drawings by Jean Lefort, prints of the Pavillon Baltard and many engravings of the Île-de-France. Recent acquisitions focus on the Marne and on Nogent. About 60% of the public are school groups, and the museum also offers art workshops and courses, as well as temporary exhibitions on local history.
