Om museet
The museum was founded in 1973 by Joseph La Picirella, a former maquisard. The Drôme department took it over in 1999 and renovated it in 2010. It is located in Vassieux-en-Vercors, a village destroyed in 1944 that became a “martyred village” and Compagnon de la Libération, behind the church.
The museum is a key place for understanding the Second World War and the Resistance in the Vercors massif and beyond. On the upper floor, the permanent route follows three periods: the Vercors before the Vercors, with life in the massif and the context up to 1942; the Vercors maquis, with the daily life of the maquisards, the help of local residents and the Allies, the general mobilisation of June 1944 and the fighting of summer 1944; and the Vercors after the Vercors, devoted to reconstruction and the building of memory.
On the first floor, a temporary exhibition is renewed every year. The visit also lets you discover traces of Vassieux's history through the landscape and the architecture of the Reconstruction. The museum is one of three sites in Vassieux, along with the Mémorial de la Résistance and the Musée de la Préhistoire.
