Om museet

The museum project was born in 1996, on the initiative of the Moselle Department and the commune of Vic-sur-Seille, where the painter Georges de La Tour was born in 1593. In 1998 the brothers Jacques and Guy Thuillier made a major donation of paintings from the 17th to the 19th century.

The museum occupies a contemporary building constructed on the site of a former 18th-century house. Over nearly 1,000 m², the collections are presented by period, floor by floor: the 17th century on the second floor, the 18th century on the third floor, then Romanticism and the 19th and early 20th centuries on the upper floors.

The museum holds nearly 200 works. Among them are “Saint Jean-Baptiste dans le désert”, painted around 1650–1652, rediscovered in Paris in 1993 and acquired by the Department, and “Profil de femme”, a fragment acquired in 2004. Old copies, such as “Les Mangeurs de pois” (acquired in 2021) and “Saint Sébastien à la lanterne” (on deposit since 2024), complement the collection, as do “Sainte Catherine d’Alexandrie” by Charles Poerson and “Saint Luc l’Évangéliste” by Jan van Bijlert.
