Om museet
The museum was born from the bequest of Dr André Voulgre to his native town of Mussidan at the end of his life, in 1970. A doctor practising in Bordeaux, he had assembled a collection on the past of the Périgord in the family home: literature, art, everyday life and the evolution of techniques. He wished the estate to bear the name Musée des arts et traditions populaires du Périgord.
The commune accepted the bequest, and the Friends of the Museum association, founded in 1973, opened the premises to the public in 1977 across more than 700 m². In 2017 the Isle et Crempse en Périgord community of municipalities took over responsibility for the museum. The buildings and the display design were renovated, with works completed in spring 2021.
The chartreuse, a manor house probably built at the beginning of the 19th century, was bought by the Voulgre family in 1903. Together with more recent themed rooms, it now houses around 5,000 everyday objects: the peasant world, landowners, crafts and rural industry in the Isle valley, from the 18th century to the present. The park of more than two hectares that surrounds the museum became a public garden in the 1980s.
