The Musée des docks romains was built on the remains of a Roman commercial warehouse discovered in 1947 during the rebuilding of the Vieux-Port districts destroyed in 1943. The historian and archaeologist Fernand Benoit made it possible to preserve part of the remains on site. These remains have been listed as a historic monument since 1959.

The museum opened in 1963 and was renovated in 1987. It displays about thirty dolia, large Roman jars sunk into the ground and used to store wine or oil. Among them are walls and wells of medieval dwellings.

Display cases along the walls tell the history of maritime trade through objects from underwater excavations of some twenty wrecks in the roadstead of Marseille, as well as from recent excavations near the town hall. The material covers about a thousand years, from the 6th century BC to the 4th century AD.

Guide dogs and assistance dogs are admitted in the rooms. The Marseille city museums offer tours in French Sign Language, audio-described or sensory tours, and tactile models or reproductions, to be arranged with the mediation team. The museum is currently closed.

The Marseille city museums hold the Famille Plus label and offer activities for young visitors during every school holiday, most often by reservation. Pushchairs and front baby carriers are admitted in the rooms; pushchairs are lent against an ID. Bulky pushchairs, landau prams and metal-framed back carriers are not allowed.
