Om museet

The AMTUIR association was founded in 1957 by transport enthusiasts. On March 16, 1957, they bought tram motor car no. 1 from Versailles, just as that network was being dismantled. The collections were first housed by the RATP, in a depot at Malakoff and then at Saint-Mandé.

The museum has been open to the public since 1964 and is run entirely by volunteers. In 1998 the Saint-Mandé depot had to be vacated and the museum closed to the public. A planned new museum in Colombes, provided for in a charter between the RATP and the association, did not materialise.

In 2008 the association and its collections moved to Chelles, at the invitation of the town. Since 2010 the museum has taken part in the European Heritage Days and the Museum Night. In 2017 it reopened one Saturday a month in a temporary space, with about half of the collection.

The collection includes full-size vehicles, models, objects, printed documents and photographic, video and audio archives. Around forty buses from Paris and the provinces are on show, along with horse-drawn, steam, compressed-air and electric trams, trolleybuses and a 1927 Sprague-Thomson metro car. The remaining vehicles are kept in storage with the RATP collection.
