Om museet

The museum is an initiative of La Vanaude, a culture and leisure association in Vanosc, which in the early 1980s received the wheelwright’s tools of Alphonse Landy, the master under whom the young Joseph Besset trained. Meeting André Besset, Joseph’s youngest son, gave rise to the idea of tracing the career of the wheelwright who became a coachbuilder, and many documents and memorabilia were gathered.

Given the success of the first exhibitions, the association decided in 1998 to create a permanent space. The first site opened in 2001. It presents documents and photographs from the 1920s to the present, a video room about Joseph Besset’s venture, and a room of model buses from around the world.

In July 2007, a second site of 1,000 m² opened. It displays vehicles from the horse-drawn era, such as a jardinière, a calèche and a handcart, as well as cars and buses built in Annonay, including a 1929 Rolland Pilain with Besset bodywork, Citroën P32 and P45 buses, Isobloc, Chausson, Floirat, Saviem and Renault V.I. vehicles. The volunteers restore the vehicles with the help of professionals.
