Om museet
The Musée du Cartonnage et de l’Imprimerie, founded in 1991, is devoted to an activity that made Valréas famous and is sometimes called the French capital of cardboard boxes. It is housed in a former shop at the south-western entrance to the town and belongs to the Vaucluse Department.
The route traces the manufacturing and printing techniques of the cardboard box from the mid-19th century to today. It features, for example, the “draft boxes” (boîtes à courant d’air) invented by Ferdinand Revoul for transporting silkworm eggs, as well as boxes for perfumery, pharmacy, jewelry and confectionery.
Visitors can also see a reconstructed workshop, cardboard and printing machines, and graphic collections: lithographic labels, posters, advertising calendars, sales representatives’ cards and company archives. Most of the collections date from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when this industry reached worldwide fame. The museum also organizes temporary exhibitions.
