Om museet

The Musée du Jouet was founded in Poissy by Marie-Madeleine Rabecq-Maillard, curator of the Musée d’Histoire de l’éducation, and opened in 1976. Originally, its collection brought together old toys representative of the great toy families. It was then enriched with European games and toys, dating mostly from 1850 to 1950. The museum is housed in the 14th-century gatehouse (porterie) of the former priory of Poissy; it received the Musée de France label in 2002.

Closed in July 2016 for a complete renovation and extension, the museum reopened on May 11, 2019, with an entirely redesigned route. Designed by director Hélène Meyer-Roudet together with the specialist Michel Manson, it follows the history of the toy and the culture of childhood in chronological order, placing the child at the centre. Ancient toys, shown thanks to a loan from the Louvre, open the route, which runs from the handcrafted objects of the Ancien Régime to the industrial products of steam, electricity, oil and finally computing.

Mechanical, digital, visual and sound animations, a tactile trail and play areas complement the display cases. About 7% of the collections are on show, more than 600 objects, with regular rotations.
