Om museet
The history of the Musée du Luxembourg begins in 1750, when part of the Palais du Luxembourg was opened to the public to display old paintings, including Rubens’s cycle on the life of Marie de’ Medici. It was then the first museum of old art open to the public. In 1818, Louis XVIII decided to set up a museum devoted to living artists there; the most admired works were then transferred to the Louvre after the death of their creators.
In 1879 the Senate asked to occupy the entire palace. In exchange, it financed the transformation of the orangery, where the museum settled in 1886 and remained for half a century. The museum closed in 1937, and its collections were distributed among the Louvre, the Musée d’Orsay and the Centre Pompidou. The building then remained unused for a long time.
Since 1979 the site has again hosted exhibitions. The Senate has managed it since 2000 and entrusted it to GrandPalaisRmn in 2010. The museum no longer has a permanent collection: each year it presents two major exhibitions, devoted for example to 20th-century modernity, photography or women artists. It is closed between exhibitions and has a bookshop and a tea room.
