Om museet
The museum is housed in the Hôtel de Lafite de Pelleport, an aristocratic residence from the late 17th century listed as a historic monument. A municipal museum, it opened in the mid-1980s and celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2026. Its mission is to preserve and promote the art and craftsmanship of Rabastens and its surroundings.
The archaeology section brings together finds from prehistory to the early Middle Ages, including part of a mosaic from the Gallo-Roman villa of Las Peyras. The museum holds around 150 pieces of glazed earthenware from Giroussens, from the mid-17th to the late 18th century, which it presents as the most important public collection of this production. Carpentry objects, including works by the journeyman carpenter Roger Bellegarde, and furniture complete the route.
Fine arts and decorative arts include paintings, drawings, prints and sculptures by local artists such as Jane Atché, René Bégué and Paul Prouho, as well as haute couture creations. A section of sacred art shows objects from churches in the region, some of which no longer exist.
