Om museet
The first museum in Grasse was founded in 1918 by François Carnot, a passionate advocate of the idea of a perfume museum. He already planned a section devoted to perfumery, which grew from 1921 thanks to donors, the perfume houses of Grasse and Paris, and private collectors. In 1955, the arrival of a young curator revived the project, but for a long time the town provided no support.
The Musée international de la Parfumerie opened in January 1989, the bicentenary year of French perfumery. It is a public institution holding the “Musée de France” label, created to preserve the memory of a trade and of a Grasse specialty. Works begun in 2006 doubled its size: it has since offered more than 3,500 m² entirely devoted to the world of perfume.
The route follows Western history, from antiquity through the modern and contemporary periods, in five sections. It presents raw materials, manufacturing, industry, design and uses, through art objects, decorative arts, textiles, archaeological evidence and industrial pieces. The museum also covers soap, make-up and cosmetics over four thousand years, as well as globalization and marketing.
