Om museet
Construction of the Château d'Eu began in 1578 at the initiative of Catherine de Clèves and Henri de Lorraine, Duke of Guise; only one wing of the U-shaped project was built. In the 17th century the Grande Mademoiselle, cousin of Louis XIV, acquired the county, had a French formal garden laid out and assembled a rich collection of portraits.
In 1821 the estate passed to the Duke of Orléans, the future King Louis-Philippe, who made it his summer residence; he received Queen Victoria there in 1843 and 1845. After 1874 Eugène Viollet-le-Duc remodelled and decorated the château for the Comte de Paris. A fire destroyed the south wing in 1902; Isabelle of Brazil and her husband Gaston d'Orléans, Count of Eu, bought the château in 1905 and had it restored.
Put up for sale by the Orléans-Bragança family in 1953, the château was bought in 1964 by the town of Eu, which installed the town hall and the municipal museum there in 1973. The Louis-Philippe Museum brings together paintings, tapestries, furniture and works of art that decorated the residence. The route comprises around fifteen rooms.
