Om museet

The museum occupies the Hôtel Dufraisse, a mansion built of Volvic stone in 1707 for a family of Riom notables. The City of Riom bought it in 1866 to create a museum, which opened on December 23, 1866. Francisque Mandet, a councillor at the court of appeal, was its first director, and the museum took his name after his death in 1885.

Between 1869 and 1877, the Riom decorative painter Alphonse Cornet painted the ceilings of the Antiques cabinet, the vestibule and the grand staircase. In 1928, the politician Étienne Clémentel became curator and secured major loans from the State for the museum. In 1957, the hotel's third floor, which had housed a girls' secondary school, was added to the museum and hosts 20th-century paintings.

In 1983, the museum expanded into the neighbouring Hôtel Desaix, which presents an important gift of decorative arts from a Riom couple. In 2011, the honour court was re-paved and a design department, featuring goldsmiths' work and ceramics, opened in the west wing.

Today the museum holds about 14,000 works, from antiquity to the present day: medieval sculptures, 17th- and 18th-century paintings, furniture and decorative arts, 19th- and 20th-century painting, as well as contemporary design. In 2026, a programme to repair the roofs and façades was launched, and the permanent collections display is being redesigned.
