Om museet
The museum is linked to Adrien Dubouché (1818–1881), a Limoges merchant and patron. As president of the Société des Amis des arts du Limousin, he ran the museum on a voluntary basis from 1865. In 1868 he founded an art school in the same building, so that the collections would inspire artists and porcelain craftsmen. He continued to enrich the collections until his death in 1881.
That same year, the State took over the museum and its collections from the City of Limoges. A new building, begun in 1896 on the site of a former asylum to plans by the architect Henri Mayeux, opened in 1900. It is in an Italianate style, with architectural ceramics, and was listed as a monument historique in 1992.
From 2003 a European competition led to an extension designed by the architect Boris Podrecca: a glass building links Mayeux's museum to the former École des arts décoratifs and houses the reception, the shop and the start of the visit route. The museum now occupies three buildings.
The collections, some 18,000 works, cover ceramics, glass and manufacturing techniques, and form the largest public collection of Limoges porcelain. The visit route is circular: it starts with manufacturing techniques, traces the history of ceramics from antiquity to today and ends with Limoges porcelain.
